ELAC (English Learners Advisory Council) meetings are held monthly to advise and provide information to the parents of English Learners, and help in the development of their child’s learning experience. The Committee also advises the School Site Committee on matters pertaining to English Learners. Additional funds are allotted to Hancock Park School for your participation in ELAC. A strong and consistent level of parent participation is necessary to receive much needed funding. Meetings are held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30, the third Wednesday of every month, in Room 22. All parents are welcome at meetings! Interpreters are provided, along with coffee and cookies.

IV. Report from Diana Machado – PHBAO Representative
“The Middle School Experience”
Ms. Machado described differences parents will encounter in middle schools, and gave direction to parents regarding involvement in their child’s education and experience. Ms. Machado illuminated the need for parental involvement by foregrounding disappointing LAUSD high school and college graduation statistics. She gave parents a list of questions to ask on a school campus tour. She also went over the STAR student report to help parents evaluate their children’s academic performance, and then discussed the changing physical, emotional and social pressures awaiting students in middle school. Also, middle schools have several, single-subject teachers as opposed to one classroom teacher in elementary, and Ms. Machado discussed the difficulties involved.
