Parents of English Learners

GENERAL INFORMATION

Learning English at home: If you're looking for a great website that teaches kids English at their own pace, at home or wherever there's access to a web browser, check out:
www.starfall.com

Or the school has a subscription to:

http://www.brainpopesl.com/

username: hancockpark
password: jaguar

Kids love both.  Brainpop ESL is a sequential course in English with distinct levels, lessons, and "hear it/say it" module for each lesson.  Starfall is great for Kindergarteners, but also has very entertaining modules for even advanced English learners, involving literature, folktales, music, culture and traditions from all over the world.

ELAC Information: Click here to go to the ELAC webpage, where you'll find the minutes from the most recent ELAC meeting. Next English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meeting, Monday, April 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. in the Teacher's Lounge.

ELAC for 2011-12
CHAIR: Hyungsoo (Steve) Kim
VICE CHAIR: Sung Youn Gil
DELAC REPRESENTATIVE: Don Heo (Steve Kim is acting Rep. as of 2-6-12)
ALTERNATE DELAC REP.: Keumhee Kim
PARLIAMENTARIAN: Susan Brin
COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Jihyun Lee, Laura Icken, Jihee Kim, Nile El Wardani

ELAC meetings are held monthly, and are open to all parents in the school. Interpreters are provided. At these meetings, the Principal and Coordinator provide information and answer questions -- for example, about the magnet school process, STAR testing, CELDT testing, and so on. The Committee also drafts advisories to the School Site Committee on matters pertaining to English Learners. Additional funds are allotted to Hancock Park School for your participation in ELAC.  A strong and consistent level of parent participation is necessary to receive much needed funding.
